«Smoke of the Bonfire»
Do not look with furrowed brows,
Do not turn your beautiful eyes away.
Dry grass, wind in the field,
The sad tale of an old gypsy woman:
Of how there will be love and caresses,
Deception and a fateful turn,
And you will leave, breaking your vow,
And I will weep for you.
The smoke of a bonfire, the distant waters,
A willow bows above the stream.
My raven-maned steed,
Light are the traces of your hooves.
Here is the garden, here is the house, your window...
And a wave of heat will sweep the heart.
Ah, perhaps memory and love
Will bring you back, my beautiful one.
How we loved to sit together, just the two of us,
To linger long beside the campfire,
And kiss until the break of dawn
Beneath the starry canopy.
Winter has come. In the Don steppe
The white snows swirl,
Weeping and singing of something—
The witch—the whirling blizzard.
