NEW MUSEUM OF THEATRE in Yaroslavl

NEW MUSEUM OF THEATRE in Yaroslavl
Particular attention is paid not only to Volkov's biography, but also to his contribution to the development of the national theatre, as well as to his troupe, which became the prototype for the entire Russian acting school.
«In December 2024, I was invited to the Bakhrushin Museum for project work to curate the Federal project «New Museum of Theatre» (the author of the idea and project head is K. D. Trubinova, General Director of the Bakhrushin Theatre Museum) and to head the Department of Research and Methodological Work.

Thus, on June 30, 2025, one of the most beautiful projects appeared in my professional biography. In Yaroslavl, within the building of the Fyodor Volkov Russian State Academic Drama Theatre, a new permanent museum exhibition prepared by the Bakhrushin Theatre Museum was inaugurated. The project was realized within the framework of the Federal Programme «New Museum of Theatre», with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, and was timed to coincide with the 275th anniversary of the Volkov Theatre — Russia's first professional theatre».
The exhibition, spanning more than 300 square meters, is located directly within the theater's interiors. It comprises nine thematic sections and features over 250 authentic exhibits from the collections of the Bakhrushin Museum and the theater's archive. Among the rarities are 18th-century documents, posters, programs, theatrical costumes, and set design models for productions from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The project highlights Fyodor Volkov's role in the formation of the Russian theatrical school, the transformation of Yaroslavl into the theatrical capital of the 19th century, as well as the history of the theatre during the Great Patriotic War — both at the front and on the home front — and its modern chapters.
PROJECT MANAGER: Kristina Trubinova, General Director of the Bakhrushin Theatre Museum.
CO-PROJECT MANAGER: Valery Kirillov, Artistic Director of the Fyodor Volkov Theatre.
CURATOR: Anna Kolesnikova, Head of the Research and Methodological Department of the Bakhrushin Theatre Museum.
CO-CURATOR: Irina Kozlova, Keeper of the Collections of the Fyodor Volkov Theatre.
ARCHITECTURAL AND ARTISTIC DESIGN: Antonio Vilches-Nogerol, artist-designer.
Multimedia solutions — archival video, fragments of performances, audio chronicles, and interviews with masters of the stage — allow visitors to «travel» between eras and immerse themselves more deeply in the history of the First Russian Theatre.
One of the museum's central sections is dedicated to the golden age of the first Russian theatre, telling the story of outstanding 19th-century actresses — Lyubov Nikulina-Kositskaya and Polina Strepetova — as well as the actors and directors who performed on the Yaroslavl stage during their tours. Among them are Maria Yermolova and Vera Komissarzhevskaya, Mikhail Shchepkin, and Konstantin Stanislavski.
